About Jesus Christ
Jesus of Nazareth, born around 6 to 4 BC and passing away in AD 30 or 33, also known as Jesus Christ among other appellations, was a Jewish preacher and spiritual leader of the first century.
The historical existence of Jesus is widely accepted by modern scholars of antiquity. His life is primarily chronicled in the Gospels, particularly the four canonical ones in the New Testament. Scholarship has produced diverse perspectives on the historical accuracy of the Gospels and their portrayal of Jesus.
Jesus underwent circumcision at eight days old, received baptism from John the Baptist in his youth, and commenced his ministry following a 40-day fast in the wilderness. Renowned as a wandering teacher, he was commonly addressed as “rabbi.” Engaging in debates on divine obedience, performing healings, imparting teachings through parables, and amassing disciples, notably twelve primary ones, characterized his ministry. Subsequently arrested, tried by Jewish authorities, and crucified under the directive of Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect of Judea, Jesus’ followers came to believe in his resurrection. This conviction led to the formation of the early Christian Church, which burgeoned into a global movement after his ascension.
Christian doctrine affirms Jesus’ conception by the Holy Spirit, his birth to the virgin Mary, his miraculous deeds, the establishment of the Christian Church, his crucifixion as a sacrificial atonement for sin, resurrection, and ascension to Heaven. Jesus is revered by the majority of Christians as the embodiment of God the Son and a component of the Trinity. His birth is commemorated annually on December 25th as Christmas, while his crucifixion and resurrection are observed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, respectively. The widely adopted calendar era, with the current year being AD 2024, originates from the approximate time of Jesus’ birth.
In addition to Christianity, Jesus holds significance in Islam, the Baháʼí Faith, and the Druze Faith. In Islam, known as ʿĪsā in the Quran, he is considered a major prophet and the messiah, anticipated to return before the Day of Judgement. While Muslims acknowledge his birth from Mary, they refute his divinity and death, believing instead in his ascension to Heaven during his lifetime. Conversely, Judaism rejects Jesus as the awaited messiah, contending that he failed to fulfill messianic prophecies and lacked divine status or resurrection.
