About Jesus

Jesus, born around 6 to 4 BC and passing away in AD 30 or 33, is also known as Jesus Christ, Jesus of Nazareth, among other names. He emerged as a prominent figure in the first century, recognized as a Jewish preacher and spiritual leader. Central to Christianity, the largest global religion, Jesus is widely regarded by adherents as the embodiment of God the Son and the anticipated messiah, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies.

Scholars broadly agree on the historical existence of Jesus, with accounts of his life primarily documented in the Gospels, particularly the four canonical ones in the New Testament. However, scholarly opinions vary on the historical accuracy of these accounts. Jesus underwent circumcision at eight days old, received baptism from John the Baptist in adulthood, and commenced his ministry following a period of fasting in the wilderness. Renowned as a wandering teacher, he was commonly addressed as “rabbi” and engaged in theological debates, healing, and teaching through parables, drawing disciples, including twelve primary ones.

Following his arrest in Jerusalem and subsequent trial by Jewish authorities, Jesus was handed over to Roman governance and crucified under the directive of Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect of Judea. His followers came to believe in his resurrection after his death, leading to the formation of the early Christian Church, which evolved into a global movement.

Christian theology attributes miraculous conception to Jesus through the Holy Spirit and his birth to the virgin Mary. It also asserts his role as the founder of the Christian Church, his sacrificial death by crucifixion for the redemption of sins, his resurrection, and ascension to Heaven, with the promise of a future return. The majority of Christians worship Jesus as God the Son incarnate, part of the Trinity. His birth is celebrated annually on December 25th (Christmas), his crucifixion commemorated on Good Friday, and his resurrection observed on Easter Sunday.

Beyond Christianity, Jesus holds significance in Islam, the Baháʼí Faith, and the Druze Faith. In Islam, he is considered a prophet and the messiah, set to return before the Day of Judgment, albeit with differing theological interpretations from Christianity. Judaism, however, rejects Jesus as the messiah, contending that he did not fulfill messianic prophecies and lacks divine status or resurrection.
